
Lead by Dr. Benno Boer, UNESCO Chief of Natural Sciences for the South Asia Regional Office, the field trip to this UNESCO World Heritage Site provided students with a rich, firsthand experience of Sri Lanka’s unique biodiversity and one of the last remaining primary rainforests in the country.
The first annual PGF International Day of Greening Education was inspired by the UN’s International Day of Education. It was attended by representatives of UNESCO, FAO and the Ministry of Education and included students from UNESCO ASPNet schools from across Sri Lanka along with Ananda students for a day of green competitions, presentations and activities. Additionally, Dr. Ranil Senanayake held a presentation on Chaya as part of the day, marking the planting of 100 saplings, highlighting the importance of nutrition security education.

This innovative Center will serve as the flagship for Planet Green Force, a new environmental league for youth PreK-12, which incorporates the four pillars of UNESCO Green Academies and beyond, UNESCO Greening Education Partnership, Climate Science Literacy and the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
